Research Question from the 2023 Secret Santa event

I would greatly appreciate any concrete information about my ancestor John B. Hay (a.k.a. Hays). I have been unable to find any birth, marriage or death records for him. submitted for the 2023 Secret Santa event by S. Kuhn

Known Information

According to family history, John B. Hay was born around 1804-1811 in Massachusetts, and died in Peru, Illinois.

Before the 1850 Census, he married Eliza/Elizabeth Cook. In 1850, he was with his wife, Elizabeth, in Tyrone, Blair, Pennsylvania, working as a tailor with three children between the ages of one and six who had been born in Pennsylvania. ^[1]

Between the 1855 and 1858 Census, John moved his family to Illinois. In the 1860 Census, he was with his wife, Eliza, in LaSalle, LaSalle, Illinois, working as a tailor with seven children between the ages of two and sixteen. Only the two-year-old was born in Illinois. The remaining children were born in Pennsylvania.^[2]

John died sometime between 1860 and 1865. Eliza Hay appears as the head of household with six family members under the age of 30 in the 1865 Illinois State Census for LaSalle Co. ^[3]

Research Plan

The research focused on possible family connections for John B. Hay in Blair Co., Pennsylvania. Because Blair Co. was formed in 1846 "from mostly Huntingdon and a little of Bedford," Huntingdon Co records were also consulted.^[4]

The subject most likely married in Huntingdon or Blair Co before the 1850 Census, but marriage records for those counties were not kept until 1885.^[5]

Probate records were consulted in an effort to identify possible family groups where a John Hay/Hays/Hayes is listed as an heir or guardian.

Research Summary

Based on the research of Huntingdon Co. and Blair Co. Probate records, the most likely parents and family group for John Hay is the family of William (d: abt Sep 1856) and Mary Hays (d: abt Mar 1841) with around 7 children: John Hays, Samuel P Hays, Wm hays, Jane L Miller, Nancy Barrick, Hanna Graham, and a daughter that married a Mitchell. ^[6]^[7]

There are two households with a John Hay/Hays as the head of household. The Franklin township record has 2 males but they are older than the subject is believed to be.

In the Alexandria township, the age of the oldest males is a possible match for the subject. However, the male and female age 30-39 are probably a married couple and there is no evidence that the subject was married before Eliza.

ANALYSIS: This William Hays could be the same person as mentioned as Adm for the Mary Hays estate in 1841. While William's Will lists Jackson Township, Mary's record lists Barree Township. These townships are neighbors in the northeast quarter of Huntingdon Co., PA.
